Breaking Down Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates play a major role in the diet when it comes to blood sugar. As seen in this infographic, carbs come in different forms such as dairy, fruits, vegetables and grains.

Eating carbohydrates will increase blood sugar, but this does not mean carbs are bad. Carbs are the main source of energy our brain prefers. Carbs also provide energy to the heart and central nervous system.

Some sources of carbohydrates also contain fiber, which can help to aid in digestion and manage blood cholesterol levels. While carbohydrates are very important in keeping the body working properly, it is important to balance them throughout the day, to avoid blood sugar going too high.

One way to do this is by planning your meal to include all food groups: carbs, protein, healthy fat, and making sure to get in a daily serving of fruits and vegetables.

Check out my YouTube where I further explain how to build a healthy plate, and stay tuned for more blog posts where I will provide more examples of carb balanced meals and continue to break down the science of type 2 diabetes!
